Victoria (Limbe) was founded in June 1858 by the British missionary Alfred Saker of the Baptist Missionary Society of London. He bought the land from the local King William 1 of Bimbia. Therefore the city and its surroundings never belonged to the German colony of Kamerun but remained under British rule.
On May 7, 1886 England and Germany agreed to exchange Victoria and surroundings for land near the Forcados river in Nigeria and St. Lucia in South Africa and on March 28, 1887 Victoria was handed over to the German administration. At the same time Swiss missionaries bought the land from the Baptist Missionary Society in 1887. In 1915 after the first World War, Victoria became British again. In 1982 Victoria was renamed into Limbe.
Upon arrival in Limbe we make a small tour of the town. We may visit the old German botanical Gardens (1892) and the Wild Life Center where Gorilla’s, Chimpanzees and orphaned monkeys find a safe haven. Although it is the largest city in the southwest province of Cameroon, it is not the provincial capital; which is located in Buea, the former German colonial capital. Because of its size, most major roads to the provincial interior radiate from Kumba, running to the Nigerian border at Mamfe, the Korup National Park at Mundemba, and Mt. Koupe to the east. Check in hotel Elongo Gardens in Kumba. In the evening we have dinner with a Cameroonian family at home. Bridget Mufut is a Cameroonian woman from Kumba and mother of 6 children.
